My Reunion with Twilight

Hi everyone! I hope you are all doing and staying safe.

I am currently starting to go a little crazy back home. It’s too hot to go outside but staying indoors all the time is extremely unappealing. I have entered a new stage of boredom that has for some reason got me to start rereading the Twilight series. Yes, I know; it is very embarrassing but I am only human and will do anything to entertain myself and hold onto a semblance of normalcy in this insane world. I have recently been seeing a lot of people reading or watching things they used to love growing up and I’m sure that this has to do with the fact that intaking content that is familiar is the only real way someone can control any part of their life right now. Having not read the series since middle school I have to say I was expecting worse. I finished Twilight a few days ago, skimmed through New Moon and I’m now at the start of Eclipse. I am in no way trying to argue that Twilight is a great book or even has good writing but in my opinion, it is a staple of the young adult genre and when compared to most other books in that category it’s not dramatically worse than the rest. I mean it’s defined as a paranormal teen romance, if you chose to read it that’s what you’re signing up for and expecting anything else just seems stupid. I was going through some of the reviews on Goodreads and people were listing things about why the novel was bad but in reality, they were really just listing conventions of the genre; which it’s obviously fine if you don’t like those tropes but at the same time what did you expect? In the end, I’m sure Stephenie Meyer doesn’t care about the backlash given the amount of money she has made from the franchise.

I have also started the first comic in the Deadly Class series: Reagan Youth. I have seen parts of the tv show and it has been really interesting to compare the animation style of the comic to the animation included in the show (while it is filmed mostly with real people they use animation for some of the segments). I don’t read graphic novels often (the only series I really follow is Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples which is currently on hiatus) but I so far really enjoy this one.

Working through Moby Dick has continued to be a difficult and daunting task. I’m currently on chapter 96 and am counting the pages to the end. While I understand its value within literary canon and see the ways in which it offers readers the chance to analyze its message, it is just not for me. I have a problem where if a book is assigned I will immediately like it less just because I am forced to read it. Hopefully, I will be finished by next week!
