Here are the original Japanese covers:
And here's the cover of the English version (published in one volume):
The English cover is actually a panel from the manga, just while also using the style from the original covers. The actual material of the cover has a really nice rough texture to it. It's just a well designed edition of the book, Vertical (I didn't know they did this until looking it up just now, but they're the people who localize Nisio Isin's books) did a top notch job with this publication.
And as for how I was surprised by the content, I'll briefly describe it with: two teens use a toxic sexual relationship with each other to escape their own emotional issues, with the girl being afraid that she isn't wanted by anyone, and the boy trying and failing to cope with his big brother suicide.
It wasn't a phenomenal manga really, but it was still pretty good.
The author is an absolutely amazing artist however. Every manga he writes has stunning visuals, both in art and paneling. It has such detail and depth to it.
So yeah, Inio Asano is a pretty good author. His stuff is emotionally heavy though. Like, I watched the light in one of my friends' eyes die when he finished Asano's most popular work Goodnight Punpun. Now, I haven't read Punpun yet, but that same friend said that if the main character had died it would have been a happier ending for them, so uhh. I've kinda been putting it off a bit mostly due to how much of an emotional roller coaster I know it's gonna be. (A lot of his work is published in English which is cool.)
