Best Practices for Online Learning?

There's an announcement coming from me shortly, but this is the first of two posts I'll be linking to in the announcement. Rather than moving to the Blackboard discussion forums (which stink), I'd like to continue and increase the discussion on this platform (which is not great, either, but better).

I hope you'll bookmark this and the next post I make, and return to them to comment from time to time as we try to stage a discussion about certain aspects of this class going forward.

For this one, I thought I'd invite anyone who has taken online classes before to comment about things that have worked — or not worked! — for them in the past. What's working now in your other classes? Are there things we should be doing that we are not doing?

Does that make sense? Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

  1. I've never had a solely online class before, but there seems to be a lot of different platforms for doing lectures/discussions. So far in my other classes we've used Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, which worked alright if everyone has a laptop with a good microphone. I've also heard that Zoom is trendy and works well.

I like the idea of using the blogspot for more discussions. Maybe having a few different prompts for people to write/comment on could help get the discussion going?
